Songs for a Cold Land

Songs for a Cold Land

After Paintings of Lawren Harris...

[Poetry © 2016 Jana Skarecky]

I. Lake and Mountains

White

And blue

And aquamarine,

Turquoise,

Teal,

Green,

And black.

Ripples of light,

Of earth and sky,

Waves on the water

And mountains,

Mountains towering high.

Low dark islands

Clawed by the clouds.

And mountains –

Mountains that strive

Toward heaven

Stand guard over water,

Under the sky,

They’ve touched the clouds

For endless ages,

Will touch the clouds

Forever.

II. Mt. Lefroy

Mountain rises

White

Into Blue

Piercing the sky

The cloud

The memory

The mind.

Lifting the darkness of the earth

To the light.

Shadow and light

Depth and height

Radiance

Bright

III. Above Lake Superior

Blue horizon

Stretching wide,

Shimmering lake

‘Neath greying clouds.

On the near shore

Bare tree trunks shine

Sunlit and smooth

Upright and strong

Whipped by the wind

Kissed by the sun

Gnarled and wise

Guardians

Of the lake.

IV. Pic Island

Golden light on the water,

Golden light

Bathes the island,

Its purple velvet

Contours and folds.

Restless yet resting,

Heaving, weaving, waving

Yet still,

A sleeping giant reclines

In a golden pool of light.

Grey-blue sky,

Floating cloud,

Tranquil lake

Surround his mystery.

What will happen

To earth

And water

And sky

When he wakes?

V. Icebergs, Davis Strait

Ice

White, and blue,

Floats in the cold cold water.

Mountain of ice –

Only a fragment visible

Of what is real,

While the truth

Submerged

Breathes underwater

Shielded by

Turquoise light.
